Glossary of Names Members of the Imperial Family and Important Personages Mentioned in the Text Note: Double names are listed under the second name when the person is known by that name; e.g., for Prince Mehmed Âbid, see Âbid, Prince Mehmed. abdülazz (azz), sultan Younger son of Sultan Mahmud II, Abdülaziz was born 9 February 1830 and succeeded his older brother Abdülmecid on 25 June 1861. He ruled for some fifteen years until his overthrow on 30 May 1876, shortly after which he died by his own hand, on 4 June 1876, age 46. He is buried in his father’s tomb in Istanbul. abdülhamd i, sultan Son of Sultan Ahmed III by the lady Râbia Şermî, he was born 20 March 1725 and came to the throne 21 January 1774, ruling fifteen years until his death on 7 April 1789 at the age of 64. His mausoleum is located near the New Mosque in Istanbul. abdülhamd ii (hamd), prince and sultan Son of Sultan Abdülmecid by the lady Tîrimüjgân, he was born 21 September 1842. In Tirana in 1936 the Prince married Princess Seniye of Albania, sister of King Zog; they divorced in 1948. Prince Âbid died in Beirut 8 December 1973, age 68, and was buried at the Selimiye Mosque in Damascus. âdle, princess (1) Daughter of Sultan Mahmud II by the lady Zernigâr, she was born 23 May 1826. In 1845, age 19, she married Mehmed Ali Pasha and bore five children, of whom only her daughter Princess Hayriye survived childhood. Well educated, Princess Âdile became a gifted poetess. She died 12 February 1899, age 72, and was buried in the tomb of her husband in the Eyüp district of Istanbul.
