Photographer, poet, teacher and researcher, Elena Cardona understands photopoetic creation as a form of autotheory. Currently she is a Ph.D. Candidate in the Hispanic Studies Department at UC Riverside. Her areas of study include Visual Semiotics, Philosophy, and Art-Based Critical Pedagogies, with an emphasis on Latin America. She is author of two books on the intersections between literature and visual culture, and her poems have been published in literary journals and magazines. In 2016, she received the Experimental Poetry Award from the Fundación Casa Nacional de las Letras de Venezuela. She has participated as an exhibitor in national photography salons and collective exhibitions, and has been co-curator of several photographic exhibitions. In addition to her critical theoretical research, Cardona is developing an artistic project related to her own experiences of mourning and migration through collages, videos, and poems.
