Christology, the theological study of Jesus, is based on the conviction that the entire biography of Jesus of Nazareth, the Galilean, extracted mainly from NT writings, understood as the final representative of the God of Israel, informs Christian faith to this day. The volume gives an overview of topics and texts of formative christologies and related developments over the centuries. Profiling Jesus in contemporary terms from an ecclesiastical religiohistorical view presents for the editors a major theological challenge: a Jew narrating the birth–life–crucifixion–resurrection of Jesus as INRI (Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum, Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews) and Redeemer. They opine that seventy years of Jewish–Christian dialogue have not had much influence in systematic theology. This finding was the starting point of a conference in Vienna in 2019, in which exegetes and systematists from Roman Catholic, Protestant, and Jewish traditions for the first time investigated the question of christological anti-Judaism. They addressed questions such as, How can Christians speak of Jesus Christ in a credible manner without degrading or monopolizing Judaism? The volume offers a variety of christological approaches that take Jesus seriously as a Jew and attempt to understand Judaism on an equal footing with Christianity.
