Editor's Note This issue, the first of Republican China, was edited by >rofessor John Israel, who organized and chaired the panel at the L983 Association for Asian Studies convention in San Francisco at ~hich the initial versions of these papers were presented. As he 1otes in his introduction, I welcome responses to issues raised in these essays. I plan subsequent issues to be somewhat larger than the present one. I strongly urge you to consider contributing to Republican China through your responses to material contained therein; in essays, setting forth research problems, probing the state of the field, elucidating major historiographical issues, or positing new ideas and theses; in reviews of significant Chinese and Japanese works; or in translations of key passages in major works. The February 1984 issue will include essays, reviews, and a lengthy report on current local studies of Republican China in Asia, Europe, and North America.
