The French Language in New England: Past, Present, and Future

The French language and culture of New England have historically received relatively little attention in pedagogy and research, despite the region’s rich Francophone heritage. This article argues for greater inclusion of New England French language and culture in teaching and research by providing the historical context of Francophone New England, the status of French today, and its potential for transmission to future generations. Particular attention is paid to northern Maine, where French language and culture is still part of daily life and where efforts to promote the culture and language have been active for several decades.
