In Assia Djebar's Nulle part dans la maison de mon père (2007), the abrupt and thus traumatic changes to the narrator's relationship with her father, which is founded on secrecy and judgment, train her to treasure secrecy while also cultivating an over-developed sense of guilt for keeping secrets about her romantic development from her father as she matures. Mirroring the narrator's experience, the narrative vacillates between autobiographical fact and pure fiction as well as between Algerian and French confessional styles. The novel presents the secret as an unsettling force that condemns the narrator to perceive herself as a hybrid creature.
