Abstract:

Conference Spotlight articles are an occasional feature in Advertising & Society Quarterly that highlight a conference or meeting related to advertising's place in society, culture, history, and the economy. This specific article provides an overview of a special topics session on teaching about social issues in advertising for the American Academy of Advertising's 2020 Annual Conference. During this conference session and in this summary article, each of the session's participants share approaches, experiences, and best practices on teaching about various social issues in which they specialize: socioeconomic status; ethnicity, race, and climate change; LGBTQ+ issues in advertising; women in the advertising workplace; race and racism; and ability and ableism.
