Los castigos escolares en Cuba: Debates en la Sociedad Económica de Amigos del País, 1793–1835

El artículo tiene como objetivo analizar los criterios expuestos por pedagogos e intelectuales en Cuba acerca del sistema de premios y castigos escolares entre finales del siglo XVIII y las primeras décadas de la siguiente centuria. En ese contexto transicional son expuestas las complejidades en los modos de pensar los controles y correctivos en las escuelas gratuitas y los colegios privados. Aunque varios fueron los espacios de debate, el artículo se centra en la Sociedad Económica de Amigos del País y sus Diputaciones Patrióticas, institución que nucleó a los exponentes más representativos de la pedagogía interesados en el tema de los castigos corporales, desde José Agustín Caballero, autor de las primeras ordenanzas que dispusieron normas disciplinarias para los planteles primarios, hasta José de la Luz y Caballero, artífice del “código de legislación” preventivo.

The article analyzes the conceptions of pedagogues and intellectuals in Cuba about the system of school awards and punishments between the end of the eighteenth century and the first decades of the following century. In this transitional context, the complexities in the ways of thinking, controls and corrections in public and private schools are exposed. Although the spaces for debate were diverse, the article focuses on the Economic Society of Friends of the Country and its Patriotic Deputations, an institution that integrated the most representative exponents of pedagogy interested in the subject of corporal punishment, from José Agustín Caballero, author of the first ordinances that provided disciplinary rules for the primary schools, up to José de la Luz y Caballero, architect of the preventive “code of legislation.”
