Author Jeffrey Richardson's new book details the life of Enrique Garfias, who served as the first city marshal of Phoenix, as well as in other law-enforcement capacities in the late nineteenth century. Garfias, a native of southern California, was one of the only Hispanic public officials in Phoenix in that era. The author spent a decade uncovering sources about this frontier lawman. This new biography of a largely neglected figure will be of interest to readers who enjoy tales of early territorial Arizona, especially regarding law enforcement, as well as those interested in an important Hispanic public official in a mostly Anglo town.
