9 Luis Andrés Murillo Best Article of 2012: Barbara F. Weissberger ___________________________________________________________ T he Cervantes Society of America is delighted to announce that Barbara F. Weissberger’s Fall 2012 article, “‘Es de Lope’: Child Martyrdom in Cervantes’s Los baños de Argel,” has been named the winner of the 2012 Luis Andrés Murillo Best Article of the Year award. Weissberger’s article explores the previously established connection between Cervantes’s El trato de Argel, Lope de Vega’s Los cautivos de Argel, and Cervantes’s Los baños de Argel. In this brilliant essay, Weissberger argues that another of Lope’s plays, El niño inocente de La Guardia, also serves as an important intertext for Cervantes’s second dramatic expression of the Algerian theme. As with last year’s selection process, an anonymous jury of five members of the journal’s Editorial Board evaluated all the articles published in Cervantes during 2012 (not counting book reviews and notes) and chose Weissberger’s essay as this year’s clear winner. The Cervantes Society held an award ceremony last January during its business meeting at the 2013 annual MLA Convention in Boston, Massachusetts.
