Abstract:
Recent work in computational philology has made a convincing argument that Gallus Anonymous and the Monk of Lido, authors of the Polish Gesta principum Polonorum and Venetian Translatio s. Nicolai, respectively, were one and the same author. This article reconstructs the life and career of this mobile figure and shows how his mastery of writing and rhetoric led him to pursue a career that bridged the interconnected regions and cultures of twelfth-century Europe.
