Abstract:
Giulio Aleni, a seventeenth-century Catholic missionary, was referred to as the "Confucius from the West." Analysis of the formation of his legend suggests that it is a product of a complex charismatic movement in which Christianity encounters sage cults. He was a unique example of the combination of priestly and sagely charismata, which we call Alenism.
