ABSTRACT:
As Marxism's old messianic character faded in the late twentieth century, too many forgot that wandering in the wilderness is often the precondition of a prophet's appearance. With the collapse of "really existing" socialism came what seemed like a permanent triumph of capitalism and the slow, grinding destruction of whatever resisted the market's advance.
