After a long introductory chapter that defines and analyzes the notion of “popular Confucianism” (minjian Rujiao), the author applies and tests her conceptual framework in four case studies. Each of these focuses on one exegetical text of popular sectarian background: Guangyue Laoren’s 光月老人 Sishu shuoyue 四書說約 (1870), Wang Jueyi’s 王 覺一 Daxue jie 大學解 (1895), the spirit-written Kongjiao zhenli 孔教真理 (1911), and the Republican period Daxue zhengshi 大學證釋 of the sectarian Jiushi xinjiao 救世新教. The author demonstrates the existence of a sustained popular tradition of exegetical commentary on texts of the Confucian canon and offers interesting insights into its intellectual structures and relationship with “mainstream Confucianism” (zhuliu Ruxue).
