News & Notices 89 NEWS & NOTICES: MINUTES SECOLAS General Business Meeting Notes 5lSt Annual SECOLAS Conference Spring2004, SantoDomingo The meeting convened at 6 pm. Approximately 25 people were in attendance. President Schoonover reminded the group that dues will go up to $30 next year. He informed the members that the Executive Committee had voted to recommend a new three-year membership for $75. The proposal was moved by Jim Henderson and seconded by Anne Fountain, and approved unanimously. The Executive Committeevoted to recommend to the membership that the SECOLAS website be hosted by UCF. The preferred domain name is secolas.org. The proposal was moved by Nancy Shumaker, seconded by Bill Harris, and approved unanimously. Based on a recommendation from Bruce Wilson, the Executive Committee proposed changing the name of the SECOLASjournal from SELA (The SouthEastern Latin Americanist) to The Latin Americanist: The Journal of the SouthEastern Council o f Latin American Studies. The proposal was moved by Steve Morris and seconded by Trudi Morales, and approved unanimously. The Executive Committee proposed that all monies from library subscriptions to the journal and to Annals be sent directly to the editor of The Latin Americanist (formerly SELA), i.e. Bruce Wilson, who will allocate a proportional share to the editor of Annals, i.e. Nancy Shumaker. The motion was made by Anne Fountain and seconded by Bill Harris, and approved unanimously. Based on a recommendation from Bruce Wilson, the Executive Committee proposed that the Editorial Board of The Latin Americanist (formerly SELA) be expanded from 8 to 12members, with staggered 3-year terms, and with no more than four members The Latin Americanist 9 WinterEpring 2004 representing a single discipline. The motion was made by Paula Heusinkveld,seconded by GuillermoCastillo-Feliu, and approved unanimously. Membership dues are for each calendar year (January 1 to December 31). The Executive Committee recommended that the deadline for receipt of membership dues be October 1 each year for the current calendar year. Any dues received after October 1will be applied to thefollowing calendar year (and will include a subscription to the following year’s issues of The Latin AmericanistandAnnals). The motion was made by Anne Fountain and seconded by Bill Harris. It was approved unanimously. President Schoonover reminded the members that there are no lifetime memberships. The Executive Committee forwarded the nomination of Murdo MacLeod for President-Elect. Nominations were opened and then closed, and Professor Macleod was approved by acclamation. The Executive Committee forward the nominations of Paula Heusinkveld and Greg Crider for the two at-large members of the Executive Council. Nominations were opened and closed, and the two nominees were approved unanimously. Heusinkveld will serve for two years and Crider for three. President Schoonover announced that the Executive Committee had made the following committee appointments: AB Thomas Award: Jane Landers will join Ken Mijeski and Melvin Arrington. Sturgis Leavitt Award: the new award winner (to be announced at the banquet) would join Steve Morris and Juan Carlos Rodriguez Cordero. Moseley Award: Michael Hall will join Tony Cavender and Rafael Ocasio. President-Elect Isabel Brown announced the theme for next year’s meeting: “Transnationalism: The Intersection of the Local and the Global.” President-Elect Brown announced the program chairs for next year will be Angela Willis (Davidson College) for Literature and Humanities, and Stephen Morris (University of South Alabama) for History and Social Sciences. Marshall Eakin of Vanderbilt University announced plans for next News & Notices 91 year’s meeting. The meeting will take place in Nashville, April 79 , 2005.The conference hotel will be the Courtyard Marriott near the Vanderbilt campus. The conference rate will be 85. Sessions will take place on the Vanderbilt campus. Jurgen Buchenau proposed that a membership committee be formed to recruit new members. He was elected chair, and will recruit committee members representing each of the southeastern states. The members voted unanimously to thank Michael Hall for his efforts as local arrangements chair in Santo Domingo. The members voted unanimously to thank Tom Schoonover for his service as President of SECOLAS. Harry Vanden asked that the late Robert Levine of the University of Miami be recognized at the banquet.
