The Mercat Conjecture for stable rank 2 vector bundles on generic curves

We prove the Mercat Conjecture for rank $2$ vector bundles on generic curves of every genus. For odd genus, we identify the effective divisor in ${\cal M}_g$ where the Mercat Conjecture fails and compute its slope.
