Abstract

abstract:

African American men are often implicated in discussions related to the dissolution of marriages and romantic relationships. However, there is little research featuring firsthand accounts from African American men offering their perspectives on how and why marriages and romantic relationships end. To fill this gap, this study explored African American men’s perspectives on marriage and romantic relationship dissolution. Qualitative analyses revealed that study participants cited economic disadvantage, previous negative relationships, gender mistrust, and a fear of commitment as the factors contributing the dissolution of African American marriages and romantic relationships.
