In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:

Editors Note In this volume of the Canadian Review of American Studies, we are pleased to publish a small selection of articles from the 1994 conference entitled 1 'Toward the Third Millenium: Race, Ethnicity and 'Otherness' in America," which was jointly sponsored by the Canadian Association for American Studies (CAAS) and the United States Information Services (USIS). Joseph Duffey, Director of USIS, presented the keynote address for the Third Millenium conference, speaking broadly of American and North American identities since the eighteenth century. Sidney Weintraub, Center for Strategic and International Studies and Dean Rusk Professsor of International Affairs, University of Texas, provided an overview of trade relations between Canada and the United States, stressing the positive features of past exchange and the promise of a broadened free trade area. Representing the CAASconference, we present Thomas Carmichael's article on Charles Mingus 's jazz autobiography. We always look forward to hearing our readers comments or discussions of topics and ideas presented in the journal. Beginning with the next issue of the journal we are also pleased to announce that Professor Janet Mancini Billson joins the journal as associate editor, moving from her present role on the editorial board. We know that Dr Mancini, a sociologist at George Washington University, will bring the same insight and energy to the journal as associate editor that she provided on the board. At the same time, Professor Harry Hiller, University of Calgary, who has served as an associate editor since the journal began its publication under the present editors, will be moving to the editorial board. We would like to thank him for the support he has given the journal over the past several years. C.B. S.J.R. vii ...
