NINS Scholarship Program

The National Institute for Newman Studies (NINS) offers a Scholarship Program for scholars who wish to devote a period of research and writing to the field of Newman Studies. This program is divided into two categories: Experienced Newman Scholars and Non-Experienced Newman Scholars. Qualification for these two categories are based on the following criteria:

Experienced Newman Scholar – A candidate may qualify for this level if one or more of the following accomplishments in Newman Studies can be documented: MA thesis or PhD dissertation (completed or in process), conference presentation, course taught at a university or college, or peer-reviewed publication (article or book).

Non-Experienced Newman Scholar – A scholar with demonstrated scholarly accomplishments (such as those listed above) in an associated field of study, but who has not yet incorporated Newman-related projects into her or his research agenda. Periods of study may range from two to eight weeks. Stipends are provided in a lump sum.

Scholars residing a distance of 40 miles or more from Pittsburgh may request accommodations in one of the suites at NINS. Scholars traveling from outside of North America may request a $500 travel grant in addition to the stipend. Students enrolled in a higher education institution and pursuing a degree with an MA thesis or a PhD dissertation related to Newman can apply for lodging-only grants, for a duration of up to 2 weeks (with a letter of recommendation from mentor or major professor). In order to submit an application, scholars must send by way of NINS' online application webpage the following: application form, CV with complete list of publications, two letters of recommendation, research proposal with a provisional, detailed timeline.

On completing a scholarship, the following materials must be presented – Experienced Scholar: Exit Evaluation Form and Narrative Report of Project detailing progress toward completion of proposed project and summary of outcomes as well as a research paper based on the work done at the Institute.

Non-Experienced Scholar: Exit Evaluation Form and Narrative Report of Project detailing progress toward completion of proposed project and summary of outcomes. Scholars must submit all required materials within 30 days from the completion of their time at NINS. Payment of the stipend will be sent after these materials are received and approved by the Executive Director. For the benefit of both the scholar and NINS' administrative personnel, all materials must be submitted at the same time, as Word/PDF documents attached to a single email addressed to admin@ninsdu.org

After completing a scholarship, candidates, regardless of their category, are eligible to re-apply only once.
