Making Saints and Performing Locality as Heritagization? : An Ethnography of Local Holiness and Village Identity in the French and Italian Alps

This paper deals with the study of today’s village identity through narratives, rituals and heritage performances of the cult of local saints in the French and Italian Alps. Both ecclesiastical and secular roles are analysed in order, firstly, to throw light on dynamic relations between the making of the saint and the construction of local identity and, secondly, to question the application of the concept of heritagization to the patron saint cult.

Cet article étudie l’identité villageoise contemporaine à travers les discours, les rituels et les performances patrimoniales associées au culte des saints locaux dans les Alpes françaises et italiennes. Les positions des ecclésiastiques et des laïcs sont analysées en vue d’éclairer d’abord les relations dynamiques qui existent entre la fabrication de la sainteté et la construction de l’identité locale, puis pour interroger l’application de la notion de patrimonialisation au culte des saints patrons.
