Deux romans, publies recemment aSaint-Boniface, en apportent une illustration nouvelle: Le vent n'a pas d'echo de Monique Jeannotte et La Fi/le begue d'Annette Saint-Pierre. Aquoi correspond cette constante litteraire francomanitobaine ? Selon la celebre remarque de Stendhal, le roman devrait assumer les fonctions d'un miroir promene le long d'un chemin. II est done cense reveler OU refleter une verite, ala fois sociale et psychologique, exterieure a l'oeuvre litteraire. II se veut "fenetre sur le monde'' destinee a amener le lecteur a une prise de conscience de phenomenes qui lui sont familiers, sans qu'ils fournissent matiere ordinaire asa reflexion. Pour ce faire, l'auteur a recours ala "mimesis" du monde exterieur, l'oeuvre se voulant transparence. A}'extreme lirnite, celle du naturalisme, l'oeuvre, l'auteur et le lecteur sont censes dispara1tre pour faire Revue d'etudes canadiennes Vol. 19, No. 3 (Automne 1984 Fall) place ala "verite pure"; le contenu triomphe sur la forme qui n'est que la servante du premier. Quelle est cette verite qui doit etre transmise a tout prix? Curieusement, le realisme litteraire traditionnel se nourrit avant tout de determinisme, d'un determinisme psychologique et social ou les facteurs hereditaires et l'environnement fa~onnent toute une destinee humaine dont le personnage est le prisonnier .
