  • Editorial Note

We are pleased and honored to present the first issue of the Journal of Korean Studies housed at Columbia University and published by Duke University Press. We would like to thank former editor-in-chief Clark Sorensen, his team at the University of Washington, and the staff at Rowman and Littlefield for their fine stewardship of the journal during a time of unprecedented growth. We also would like to take this opportunity to thank the JKS editorial board and the many colleagues in the field who have generously contributed their time and expertise to the reviewing of articles submitted to JKS. JKS made great strides during its eight-year run at the University of Washington, becoming increasingly selective in its acceptance rate for articles, expanding its readership globally via online platforms such as Project MUSE and JSTOR, and showcasing the leading work in the field by scholars in North America, Korea, Europe, and many other places. Under the aegis of the Center for Korean Research at Columbia’s Weatherhead East Asian Institute, we will strive to maintain the high quality and scholarly impact of JKS.

The spring 2017 issue contains eight articles on premodern and modern Korea that move across a range of disciplines, addressing topics related to history, law, religion, ritual, diplomacy, linguistics, urban planning, memory, consumption, globalization, and literature. This issue also includes three book reviews. We look forward to the fall 2017 special issue, “The Cold War in Korean Cinemas,” guest edited by Steven Chung (Princeton University) and Hyun Seon Park (Yonsei University).

Publication of the Journal of Korean Studies was supported by the Academy of Korean Studies Grant (AKS-K-04). We are currently accepting submissions for the spring 2018 general issue and beyond, as well as proposals for the annual fall special issues.
