Abstract

William Parry claims that Byron told him he wanted the Greeks to 'invest' him 'with the character of their ambassador […] to the United States.' Whatever the historical credibility of this claim, it provides a suggestive point of departure for exploring the relation between Byron's philhellenism and his attitude towards America near the end of his life. In the idiom of alternative history, what if Byron had lived to realise such a wish?
