“The Infirmary Sequence” is a series of poems set in a government-run residential hospital called The Virginia State Colony For Epileptics and Feebleminded, where, in the mid 1900s, thousands of people with physical and mental disabilities were forcibly sterilized. The poems introduce the reader to an invented chorus of the Colony’s patients and staff, and are concerned with the immediate, individual experience and aftermath of sexual sterilization.
