Abstract

Documentary filmmaker, Laura Poitras, investigates drone warfare in her spring 2016 exhibition at the Whitney Museum. Astronoise is an astonishing compendium of visual and textual data documenting the use of a war technology that remains misunderstood and relatively unknown to the American public. Fellow contemporary artists, James Bride and Trevor Paglen, have extracted visual data from drone feeds to create striking technological projects. To date, the Obama administration's drone program has killed over 2,500 people in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Yemen. Sustained mainstream protest or consistent newscoverage has yet to disrupt the use of this deadly martial technology. It is to be determined how artists will contribute to public consciousness of drone warfare, and eventual public agitation condemning it.
