Abstract

The ominous dream Arthur experiences predicting the rebellion of his treacherous nephew Modred (13984-14004) serves as a counterstatement to the image of Arthur as invincible and immortal conqueror presented in the Brut’s depiction of the Merlinian prophecies. Positing a limited mortal Arthur, the dream presents an alternate interpretation of Arthur, calling into question his iconic status and the role of prophecy in history.
