This article highlights the socio-economic and sex discriminations inscribed in the implementation and access to public instruction under the Republic of Alexandre Pétion (1770–1818) and that of Jean-Pierre Boyer (1776–1850). It argues that, despite a patent will for equal educational opportunities, school remained accessible to a predominantly masculine elite group destined for Haiti’s regeneration.
