This book explores the predominance of the auditory in contemporary French theatre by Nathalie Sarraute, Marguerite Duras, Hélène Cixous, and Nicole Renaude. It offers excellent, well-documented readings of major productions of each playwright’s work but suffers from a lack of sustained argument concerning two key concepts: “the feminine” and “voice.”
