Abstract

The author discusses the development of her interactive installation Without a Special Object of Worship, which explores imagery inspired by the salt-beaten Veneto-Byzantine port city of Venice, Italy. In the dimly lit space of this installation, the participant can sit at a table facing a computer monitor and turn the pages of a candle-lit artist’s book. By turning the pages, the participant controls five computer-generated sequences of two-dimensional (2D) still images and three-dimensional (3D) animations that appear on the monitor. An original soundtrack inspired by chants and religious liturgy enhances the environment. Technical details surrounding the production of the installation are discussed in detail.
