Books 356 It is in the fine arts part that the author seems overly optimistic and simplistic. Perhaps the amateur would do well to heed John Canaday writing recently in The New York Times: ‘But when it comes to art, the public auction is not what it purports to be or what it is thought to be by all but professionals and sophisticates. Beneath the gloss it is a tough, cynical business adept at the expense of the unwary and I wonder what would happen to its masquerades if there were anything comparable to the Securities and Exchange Commission to watchdog it.’ What is said of the public auction could be said of the art-selling field in general.
