Non-Verbal ‘Discussion’ Using Music and Kinetic Painting

Using a new instrument, the author’s Chromara, which ‘paints’ with lights on a translucent screen as a function of time, and a piano, two individuals composing on their respective instruments inter-related their efforts to provide a single unified experience. Throughout the period of simultaneous performance there was much evidence reported by each individual that a form of unplanned communication took place between them that influenced the musical and visual compositions they created. The only preparation made before the performance described was the previously developed competence of each artist with the piano and the Chromara instrument. This experiment provides, perhaps, further insight into the possibilities of communicating vast amounts of information without resorting to the complicated syntax and vocabulary of ordinary language

A l’aide d’un instrument nouveau, le Chromara de l’auteur, qui ‘peint’ avec un jeu de lumières sur un écran translucide en fonction du temps, et d’un piano, deux artistes, interprétant sur leur instrument respectif, coordonnèrent leurs efforts à fin de fournir une seule composition unifiée. Les deux participants affirmèrent qu’ils avaient eu des preuves manifestes que, tout au long de l’exécution simultanée une forme de communication non-préméditée s’était établie entre eux et avait influencé leurs compositions musicales et visuelles. La seule préparation précédant l’épreuve décrite était l’aptitude antérieurement acquise par chaque artiste pour le piano et le Chromara. Cette expérience nous fournit, peut-être, un autre aperçu des possibilités de communiquer de vastes quantités de renseignements sans avoir recours aux complications de syntaxe et de vocabulaire du langage courant.
