Jaan Soonvald and His Musical System

The author discusses Estonian composer, musicologist and teacher Jaan Soonvald. Soonvald, starting from mathematical ideas, was the first to introduce the term melodic tonality. He showed the inevitability of the appearance of polytonality and paved the way to computer music. His tragic life can be seen as an example of the artist’s destiny in totalitarian society.
