ICMC 2015

The 2015 International Computer Music Conference (ICMC) will take place from 25 September to 1 October 2015, hosted by the Center for Experimental Music and Intermedia (CEMI) at the University of North Texas (UNT) in Denton, Texas. The theme of the conference, “Looking Back, Looking Forward,” invites participants to reflect on the innovations, developments, and artistic challenges over the past century, and to articulate a vision for the future. To that end, the organizers have posed these questions: Have the major challenges faced in computer music and research changed over the past century? What are the leading issues in computer music today? Special topics for the 2015 conference include digital communities, big data, telematic music, intermedia, 3-D printing, new media, virtual reality, futurism, robotics, and mobile music computing.

CEMI is an interdisciplinary center focused on music and arts technologies. Founded in 1963 as the UNT Electronic Music Center, CEMI provides an environment for research and education, hosting regular public performances and fostering integration of electroacoustic music, live performance, video/film, plastic arts, and theater. CEMI’s four studios and the Merrill Ellis Intermedia Theater nurture the development of dozens of works each year, including music for live performance with interactive computer systems, multichannel surround audio compositions, film and video works, dance pieces with live video, and intermedia theatrical performances. Previously, CEMI has hosted the International Computer Music Conference in 1981, the SEAMUS National Conference in 2000, and the Electric LaTex Festival in 2007, among others.

New York City Electroacoustic Music Festival

The 2015 New York City Electroacoustic Music Festival (NYCEMF) will take place 22–28 June 2015 at the Abrons Arts Center in New York City. The NYCEMF is dedicated to showcasing the best electroacoustic music and video art from all over the world through a multiday festival in New York City. The festival includes fixed-media electroacoustic music in up to eight channels, works involving live electronics, works combining musical instruments or voices with recorded or live electronics, video and multimedia works, and audio and video installations.

The featured performer for NYCEMF 2015 is flautist Gianni Trovalusci. Trovalusci graduated in flute from the Conservatorio Santa Cecilia in Rome, specializing in contemporary repertoire with Pierre-Yves Artaud of Paris and early-music performance with Jesper Christensen and Oskar Peter at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Switzerland. His musical research has led him to discover parallel artistic areas and traces, like theatre, dance, and poetry, as is evidenced by the wide range of instruments he has adopted: modern, classical, and ethnic flutes, new specially designed instruments, and live electronics.

ISMIR 2015

The 16th International Society for Music Information Retrieval Conference (ISMIR) will take place in Malaga, Spain, from 26–30 October 2015. The conference is organized by the Grupo de Aplicación de las Tecnologías de la Información y Comunicaciones of the University of Malaga.

ISMIR is a leading research forum on processing, analyzing, searching, organizing, and accessing music-related data. According to this year’s organizers, music becomes music after being processed by the human mind, and individuals perceive music in different, complex ways. Therefore, this conference aims to embrace the complexity and diversity of music by showcasing ideas and applications for enhancing the way we interact with music.

The organizers characterize music information retrieval (MIR) as a truly interdisciplinary field, involving researchers, developers, educators, librarians, students, and professionals from the disciplines of musicology, cognitive science, library and information science, computer science, [End Page 5] electrical engineering, and many others. Therefore, as in previous years, ISMIR 2015 will provide a venue for the exchange of ideas, issues, results, and perspectives among the different profiles of people working with music and computing in a broad sense. ISMIR 2015 will cover the entire area of MIR, providing ample room for diversity and new developments.

ISMIR 2015 will include introductory and in-depth tutorials, presentations of research papers and posters, and invited talks reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of MIR research. A special session for demonstrations and late-breaking news will be hosted in which results or...
