The Journal of Women’s History is pleased to announce the winner of its 2014 National History Day women’s history award—Ailis Daly from Felix Festa Middle School in West Nyack, New York. Ailis’s project, “Thalidomide: From Tragedy Comes Testing Transformation,” examined Dr. Frances Kelsey, an FDA reviewer who refused to clear the drug Thalidomide for American markets in the 1960s. Originally prescribed for morning sickness in pregnant women, later studies revealed that thalidomide caused serious birth defects and infant death. Congratulations to Ailis! [End Page 200]
