ACADEMIC GEOGRAPHY IN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST This volume of the Yearbook contains articles on the histories of seven of the departments of geography in the Pacific Northwest. Other histories of Northwestern geography departments will be pub lished in the 1991 and 1992 Yearbooks. We hope they will form the first composite history of geography departments in a region of the United States. The idea ofwriting and publishing these histories was initiated by Sam Dicken in 1985. Sam himself played a major role in the development ofgeography in the Northwest, andwith his wife, Emily, made substantial contributions to the study of the geography of Ore gon. He did notlive to see the histories materialize, but we are pleased to dedicate them to his memory. The undersigned took up the task of coordinating the histories project. We appreciate the supportof the APCG, especially that of the Yearbook editors. Special thanks go to the members of the depart ments who pulled their histories together. The departments individu ally and all of us collectively can know more about the often rocky roads that got us here. Bill Loy Ed Price A1 Urquhart 139 ...
