House gardens were studied in Moyobamba, a town in eastern Peru. The gardens are large and long established, and have high species diversity. Soil characteristics in the gardens reflect vegetation characteristics and cultivation practices. Population pressure, alternative sources of income, and greater competition from imported foodstuffs are endangering the future of Moyobamba’s prominent and productive house gardens.
