Submission of Articles and Instructions to Authors


  1. The editor requests the submission of professionally donated articles on all aspects of opera, including history, composition, singing, conducting, staging, lighting, producing, and directing.

  2. Articles must be original material. Three copies of the manuscript must be submitted; two of them may be machine-duplicated. The entire manuscript, including endnotes, must be typed in double space on one side only of 8 1/2-by-11-inch heavy white bond paper. Erasable bond is not suitable for the publishing process. Number pages consecutively beginning with the title page. Please also submit a disk file of your article in a commonly used word-processing program, preferably Microsoft Word, on a 3-1/2-inch disk. If possible, consult Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary tenth edition, and The Chicago Manual of Style, fourteenth edition.

  3. When creating the disk file, avoid automatic hyphenation, justification of right margins, and boldface type. Underline for italics rather than use an italic font.

  4. The title page should contain a brief and meaningful title, the author's name and address, and a description of the author appropriate for the "Contributors to This Issue" page.

  5. Endnotes with full source information, including specific page numbers, are necessary for all direct quotations and frequently should be used for information that has been paraphrased. (A bibliography should be included when there is no directly quoted or paraphrased material.) Number references consecutively, in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text, by arabic numerals. Ibid. is the only Latin abbreviation to be used (not op. cit. or loc. cit.), and "ibid." should not be underlined.

  6. We welcome any photographs or other art you might submit with your article, but we require proper written permission for their publication. (The author is responsible for any fees incurred in the acquiring of such permissions.) Only black-and-white photographs should be submitted. Each illustration or photograph should have a label pasted on its back, indicating the number of the figure, the name of the author, and the top of the figure. Do not make any marks on illustrations or photographs. If supplying an electronic file for a figure in addition to hard copy, save the file in a TIFF format with fonts (if applicable) embedded. Clearly label the disk/CD with file names, platform [End Page 841] (PC or Mac), software (including version), and a list of any fonts used in the figure.

  7. Musical notations may be included in articles. These notations may be hand drawn and will be typeset by the publisher. Please place the musical examples at the end of the manuscript and include captions on a separate page.

  8. The length of articles will undoubtedly vary. It is suggested that articles be 4,000 to 6,000 words in length.

  9. All submitted articles will be reviewed by editorial consultants for suitability for publication.

  11. It is a condition of publication in the journal that authors assign copyright to Oxford University Press.
