Curtis On Monday, April 6, 1987, more than 200 persons took part in a seminar held at Haverford College on Witnesses for Change: Quaker women, 1650-1987. A joint effort of the Haverford College Quaker Collection, the history department , and the gender studies concentration at Haverford, the day-long gathering heard addresses from Phyllis Mack, Rutgers University; Mary Maples Dunn, Smith College; Barbara Miller Solomon, Harvard University; Nancy A. Hewitt, University of South Florida; Elisabeth P. Brown, Haverford Quaker Collection; and Jean Soderlund, Swarthmore Peace Collection. Plans are underway for the publication of the papers presented. The annual spring meeting of the Friends Historical Association was held on Sunday, May 31, 1987, at the Darby Friends Meeting House, Darby, PA. Members and guests of the association and of the Friends Social Union joined with Darby Friends to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the erection of the first place of worship of Darby Quakers. Following meeting for worship and a picnic lunch on the meeting house gorunds, Katherine Smedley Yellig gave the afternoon address on Martha Schofield, Crusader for Social Justice. An expanded form of this presentation will be published in the fall and will be available from Friends Book Store, 152 North 15th St., Philadelphia, PA., 19102. Exeter (Oley) and Maiden Creek Monthly Meetings in Berks County, PA., held a two day celebration on June 13 and 14, 1987, commemorating 250 years of Quakerism Then and Now. An address, The Friendly Vision, was given by Douglas Gwyn, author of the recently published Apocalypse ofthe Word: the Life and Message of George Fox. Plans are proceeding for the Seventh Biennial Conference of Quaker Historians and Archivists to be held on June 24-26, 1988, at Pickering College, Newmarket, Ontario, Canada. Thomas D. Hamm, now of the department of history at Earlham College, is serving as program chair. Papers must be submitted by December 15, 1987. On April 22, 1987, a program was presented at the Friends Meeting House at 4th and Arch Sts., Philadelphia, commemorating the 200th anniversary of the Pennsylvania Abolition Society on a reorganized and ecumenical basis. Established by members of the Society of Friends in 1775, the society broadened its base of membership in 1787 under the presidency of Benjamin Franklin, and memoralized the Constitutional Convention then sitting in Philadelphia urging that body "to make the supression of the African trade in the United States a part of their important deliberations". Many Friends were active in the celebration on April 22 and continue to serve on the board of directors of the current Pennsylvania Abolition Society. An oil painting of the Jordan Friends Meeting House in Buckinghamshire England, painted by Samuel Reed, has long been in private hands.
