In the Backdrop of Modernism: Allanah Harper and Echanges

This article aims to raise questions concerning inclusion or exclusion in the story of modernism, in this case the specific account of Anglo-American little magazines published in Europe between the wars. Allanah Harper, the editor of such a magazine, the little known Echanges: Revue trimestrielle de littérature Anglaise et Française, attempted to position her review among a configuration of literary and cultural magazines at the time. A study of this attempt reveals the position taking, categorization, and domination at work in the field of literary reviews and thus begins to suggest why Echanges has receded into the backdrop of modernism.
