NEWSLETTER Three events of current interest to RMMLA members have been announced outside our region. First, Florida State University has asked that the Secretariat call to the attention of our membership two symposia in Comparative Literature, under the general title "The Outsider." The first, January 25-26, 1973, will specifically address itself to the theme of "The Rebel," while the second, April 11-12, 1973, will deal with "The Exile." Second, the Modern Language Association has just announced publication of the second edition of Donald G. Wing's Short-Title Catalogue of Books Printed in Enghnd . . . 1641-1700. This long-awaited second edition is a complete revision of the first on the basis of information accumulated over the past twenty-seven years. The second edition will be in three volumes, of which Volume I is already in print. Volumes II and III are forthcoming. Third, the National Endowment for the Humanities has announced the establishment of a program of Summer Seminars for teachers in small private and state colleges and junior colleges, beginning in the summer of 1973. These seminars are intended to enable college teachers to work in their areas of interest with distinguished scholars at major universities. The first year's seminars will be offered in English and American hterature and in history. The National Endowment for the Humanities is seeking both participants in these seminars and scholars to conduct them. The deadline for seminar proposals is January 3, 1973. Those interested in participation in or direction of these seminars should write directly to the Division of Fellowships, National Endowment for the Humanities, 806 Fifteenth Street, N. W. Washington, D. C. 20506. We are saddened to report the death of Professor Sydney W. Angleman, professor emeritus of English at the University of Utah. Professor Angleman, who had taught at Utah from 1927 until his retirement in 1970, died following heart surgery in May, 1971. Professor Brewster Ghiselin of the Department of English at the University of Utah retired at the end of June, 1971. He had been a member of the English department since 1929. Also at Utah, Professor Milton Voigt is the new chairman of the Department of English. . . . Jan Brunvand and Roger C. Steensma have been promoted to professor. . . . Professor Steensma, whose book, Sir William Temple, was published by Twayne publishers in 1970, is Fulbright lecturer in American Literature and in Shakespeare at the University of Jyväskylä in Finland for the present academic year. . . . Geoffrey Aggeler, Franklin Fisher, David Kranes, and Thomas Sobchack have been promoted to associate professor of English. 114RMMLA BulletinFall 1972 The University of Texas at El Paso reports the retirement in 1972 of Professor C. L. Sonnichsen. Professor Sonnichsen, whose work in Western American hterature and history is well known to scholars in these fields, has taken a new position as director of publications for and editor of the journal of the Arizona Historical Society in Tucson. Professor Sonnichsen's classic biography of Judge Roy Bean has recently been reissued in paperback by Fawcett books. Professor Sonnichsen delivered the Commencement Address at UTEP on May 13, 1972. He was named to the Historic Hall of Fame by the El Paso County Historical Society in 1972 and was honored by the mayor of El Paso in 1971 with the proclamation of November 21 as "Hugh White— C. L. Sonnichsen Day." Also at UTEP Frances Hernandez (English) has been promoted to associate professor, together with Patrida E. Carr (English), who is presently on leave for research and writing. . . . Robert M. Esch (English) and Dorothy S. White (English) have both been promoted to assistant professor. . . . And Phillip D. Ortega (English) has left as director of the Chicano Affairs Program to assume his new duties as assistant to the president of Metropolitan State College in Denver. New Mexico State University (Las Cruces) announces the promotion of Kathleen Joyce Ader to Professor of Spanish. . . . Sergio Elizondo (Spanish) has replaced C. H. Stubing (German) as chairman...
