About the Authors and Editors Ellen Garrison received her doctorate in history, with a concentration in southern history, from Stanford University. She has been archivist at the Center for Popular Music since 1987 and was formerly technical services archivist at the Southern Historical Collection, Library of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Pamela Grundy is a Ph.D. candidate in history at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is author of You Always Think ofHome: A Portrait ofClay County, Alabama and The Most Demoaatic Sport: Basketball and Culture in the Central Piedmont, 1893-1994. She received the 1994 Louis Pelzer Award from the Organization of American Historians for an essay about hillbilly music on WBT-Charlotte, which will be published in the Journal of American History in 1995. James L. Leloudis is assistant professor of history at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Leloudis is coauthor of Like a Family: The Making of a Southern Cotton Mill World. Leloudis is review editor of Southern Cultures. David Moltke-Hansen is director of the Southern Historical and Folklife Collections and curator of manuscripts at the library of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Moltke-Hansen is associate editor of Southern Cultures and writes on southern intellectual history. John Shelton Reed is William Rand Kenan Jr. Professor of Sociology, director of the Institute for Research in Social Science, and interim director of the Center for the Study of the American South at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His most recent book is Surveying the South: Essays in Regional Sociology. Reed is coeditor of Southern Cultures. John Herbert Roper is professor of history at Emory and Henry College. He is the author of U. B. Phillips, a Southern Mind; C. Vann Woodward, Southerner, and Mark Morgan and Laurel Hill: A Personal Capitalism. Harry L. Watson is professor of history at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His most recent publication is Liberty and Politics: The Politics ofJacksonian America.
