About the Contributors Gavin James Campbell is music editor for Southern Cultures. He received his Ph.D. in history from die University ofNorth Carolina at Chapel HiH. His dissertation was tided "Music and die Making of a Jim Crow Culture, 1900—1925." Joseph Crespino is a doctoral student in American History at Stanford University. A native of Macon, Mississippi, his dissertation examines white resistance to racial change in post—World War II Mississippi. Charlie Curtis has worked in fashion photography and estate gardening. He lives in Albemarle County, Virginia, with his wife, Jackie, and his daughter, Emily. In addition to publishing his photographs in magazines, he hopes to bring his pictures together in book form. Kathleen Drowne is a fellow at the W E. B. Du Bois Institute for Afro-American Research at Harvard University, where she is finishing her dissertation on American literature of die 1920s. OtIs L Graham is Distinguished Visiting Professor at die University of North Carolina at Wilmington and Professor (Emeritus) at die University of California Santa Barbara. He teaches the environmental history of the southeastern United States, and this winter will be the guest editor of a symposium on "Environmental Policy and Politics, 1960s to 1 990s" in Thefournal ofPolig History (Winter 2000). Patrick Huber teaches in the history department at Central Missouri State University and is currendy completing his dissertation on hillbilly music at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. John Shelton Reed is William Rand Kenan Jr. Professor of Sociology and die director of the Odum Institute for Research in Social Science at die University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Among his recent books is 1001 Things Everyone Should KnowAbout the South, written with his wife, Dale Volberg Reed. He is coeditor of Southern Cultures. Harry L. Watson is professor ofhistory at die University of Nordi Carolina at Chapel Hill and director of UNCs Center for the Study of the American South.
