INGLE MEMORIAL WRITING AWARD When Perspectives initiated its writing contests for young scholars, we had some doubts that it would succeed. We really questioned whether there was a sufficient number of persons under 36 who might wish to compete—who really thought they had something to say and knew how to put it together attractively. Responses have proved our apprehension totally unwarranted. The 1988 contest has been our most successful. Thirty-one manuscripts were submitted; all were read by at least one reviewer who did not know that the paper was submitted in competi- . tion. The better papers were then judged by a committee of the editorial board members who unanimously decided that Robert S. RootBernstein 's "How Scientists Really Think" was the winning essay.
