-1Preface Four of the papers included in this supplement were originally presented at a panel at the International Congress of Human Sciences in Asia and North Africa (formerly International Congress of Orientalists) held in Mexico City on August 3, 1976. These are by Peter Ward Fay, Tan Chung, John Y. Wong, and myself. With the indulgence of Ramon »yers, I have contributed two more, the introductory historiographical essay, and the interview with Chang Chi-Ch'ien, an historian at Peking University. I am grateful to Mme. Graciela de la Lama of El Colegio De Mexico for permitting us to publish our papers separately, to Ramon Myers for graciously agreeing to devote a special supplement of the CSWT to our papers, and to Mrs. Ching-yi Dougherty for inserting the Chinese characters. Peter Ward Fay wishes to emphasize that the conclusions of his provocative essay are pending upon further research among the Palmerston papers, and should at this stage be taken tentatively. Dilip K.
