Abstract

Although Jacque's Redwall novels have the potential for introducing young readers to the middle ages and for the cultivation of historical insight, they fail because of their incompleteness. One example is the elimination of Christianity. While the animals go on quests, nothing explains the motivation for defending good or even the basis for what good is. Jacques's works make use of the particulars of medieval society to create appealing and familiar novels but in the end, they remain a superficial introduction to medievalism.
