In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:

McKendrick's analysis is balanced and perceptive, particularly when she relates some of the females in traditionally masculine roles to the topos of the "world upsidedown." Once again, however , I must sound the warning: the desire to perform in roles traditionally reserved for men by social biases is not equivalent to behaving in a masculine manner. The former is a desire for equality; the latter, a mode of thinking or behaving with virility. Both are subjects for drama, as the McKendrick book details, but the distinction is not made clear. With the one important reservation that runs throughout my evaluation , then, namely that too many trees are examined and their relationship is either blurred or missed, thus causing the forest to elude us, Dr. McKendrick's book is an important survey of one of the dramatic types of the Comedia. I hope we can look forward to a second edition which takes into account some of the older trees in the Valencian forest and which distinguishes feminist egalitarianism on the part of women who nonetheless wish to retain their femininity from those who truly behavein a virile manner and display varonilidad. Finally , I would hope that such a revision included as well some recent studies which bear directly on the theme Dr. McKendrick has selected. I refer, for instance, to Helen Adolf's contribution, "The Amazon Type in Literature," in the 1959 Proceedings of the 2nd Congress of the International Comparative Literature Assoc, and the unpublished dissertation (1969) of Marguerite Lundelius , "The Mujer Varonil in the Theatre of the Siglo de Oro." In sum: a fine effort but hardly the last word on the subject. University of Vermont John G. Weiger MLA PROGAM: SPANISH 3 Chairman, CHARLOTTE STERN, Randolph-Macon Woman's Coll.; Secretary , A.
