Bronwen Manby is the Deputy Director of the Africa Division of Human Rights Watch.

Monique Marks is a Senior Lecturer in the Sociology Programme at the University of Natal, Durban.

Robert Morrell is a Professor of Education at the University of Natal, Durban.

Mark Shaw is currently with the Crime Reduction and Analysis Branch of the United Nations Centre for International Crime Prevention. At the time of writing this article he was a Research Fellow at the South African Institute of International Affairs, Johannesburg.

Clifford Shearing is a Professor at the Law Programme and Regulatory Institutions Network at the Australian National University. He is also the Director of the Community Peace Programme at the University of the Western Cape and a Senior Research Fellow at the Munk Centre for International Studies at the University of Toronto.
