Reading Pierre Troterel's La Tragédie de sainte Agnès (1615) against Counter-Reformation discourses, "Staging Sanctity" argues that this depiction of the patron saint of virginity slips between praise and subversion, thus creating moral confusion between official doxae on sanctity and representations of martyrs on the early modern urban stage.
