Announcements

The Scholars Research Program, funded by the Ulysses S. Grant Association, announces plans to provide up to five grants of $500 each to qualified scholars for on-campus research in the Ulysses S. Grant Presidential Papers Collection, located at Mississippi State University. Mainly consisting of photocopies and typescripts of Grant correspondence, the Collection was accumulated by the Ulysses S. Grant Association for the preparation of the 31 volume Papers of Ulysses S. Grant. Graduate students and post-doctoral scholars are especially encouraged to apply, although applications from all scholars in nineteenth-century American history will be considered. Applications must be received by March 1, and research visits must take place during the calendar year. Awards will be announced on April 7, the anniversary of Grant's birth, and research visits must be within that calendar year. Awards

The Museum of the Confederacy is pleased to announce the winners of its 39th annual literary awards competition.

The recipient of the 2008 Jefferson Davis Award is Joseph T. Glatthaar for General Lee's Army: From Victory to Collapse (Free Press). The Davis Award is given annually for outstanding narrative work on the period of the Confederacy. The other finalist for the Davis Award was Thavolia Glymph's Out of the House of Bondage: The Transformation of the Plantation Household (Cambridge University Press).

The recipient of the 2007–8 Founders Award is Charles W. Mitchell for Maryland Voices of the Civil War (Johns Hopkins University Press). The Founders Award is given biennially for outstanding editing of primary sources on the period of the Confederacy.

The other finalists for the Founders Award are (in alphabetical order by author) Peter A. Brown, Take Sides with the Truth: The Postwar Letters of John Singleton Mosby to Samuel F. Chapman (University Press of Kentucky); Jennifer W. Ford, The Hour of Our Nation's Agony: The Civil War Letters of Lt. William Cowper Nelson of Mississippi (University of Tennessee Press); and David W. Lowe, Meade's Army: The Private Notebooks of Lt. Col. Theodore Lyman (Kent State University Press). The jury also cited for honorable mention volume 12 of The Papers of Jefferson Davis (Louisiana State University Press), edited by Lynda L. Crist, et al.

The Society of Civil War Historians is pleased to announce the first annual Tom Watson Brown Book Award. The inaugural Tom Watson Brown Book Award will recognize an outstanding scholarly book published in 2009 on the causes, conduct, and effects, broadly defined, of the Civil War with a $50,000 prize to be awarded at the 2010 Southern Historical Association meeting. All genres of scholarship within the field will be eligible, including, but not exclusive to, monographs, synthetic works presenting original interpretations, and biographies. Works of fiction, poetry, and textbooks will not be considered. Jurors will consider nominated works' scholarly and literary merit as well as the extent to which they make original contributions to our understanding of the period. The award is sponsored by the Watson-Brown Foundation, Inc., which funds undergraduate scholarships, historic preservation, and grants for southern studies.
