Abstract

A poster for W.H. Power's touring production of The Ivy Leaf, an American melodrama celebrating life in rural Ireland, suggests a reliable source for Edison's 1908 film Rescued from an Eagle's Nest. Challenging Charles Musser's claim that this film, produced by Edwin S. Porter, directed by J. Searle Dawley, and featuring D.W. Griffith in a leading role, was entirely derived from a waxwork group in New York's Eden Musée, Mayer offers pictorial and textual evidence that the film was taken from this theatrical source.
